Discovering Safety and Community Through the Mezuzah: A Special Women’s Event

In times of uncertainty, finding solace in tradition and community becomes paramount. On Wednesday, Jan 17th, we hosted a remarkable event at BRS, in collaboration with Jewish Family Experience and BRS outreach: a Women’s Mezuzah Making gathering.

The Mezuzah, a small but significant item affixed to the doorposts of Jewish homes, has served as a symbol of protection throughout history. Its presence is a tangible reminder of the sheltering embrace of Hashem, especially during challenging times.

As we navigate the complexities of the present day, the Mezuzah takes on added significance. It serves as a beacon of hope, uniting us in our shared heritage and faith. In the face of crisis, it is a source of comfort, reminding us that we are not alone.

We kicked off the event with a recitation of Tehillim (Psalms) for our brothers and sisters in Israel. Next we were treated to a short introduction to Mezuzah from Rachey Mirzeoff, an educator from the community, who helped us understand the mitzvah of mezuzah and the power it holds.

The event was more than just a crafting workshop; it was an opportunity to come together as a community, to draw strength from one another, and to reaffirm our connection to something greater than ourselves. By participating, we not only engaged in a cherished tradition but also contribute to the fabric of our collective identity. Led by a resin artist, we created beautifully adorned resin mezuzahs.

Over 70 women gathered to find strength and bask in the safety and security that the Mezuzah represents. Together, we forged bonds that transcend the challenges of the moment, drawing inspiration from the timeless traditions that have sustained us for generations.
