October 7, 2023, will forever be remembered as one of the darkest days in Jewish history. Unfathomable atrocities were committed against our people, leaving the Jewish nation in a state of shock, grief, and disbelief. How do we begin to process such profound loss? How could this happen? Being in America during this chapter in our history brought its own unique feelings of helplessness. Being so far from our brothers and sisters in Israel, many of us felt an overwhelming desire to be there, to help, and to do whatever we could to support our people.
Looking back, this remains a deeply painful period in our history. Yet, it was also a time when the Jewish nation came together in extraordinary ways. People reached deep into their souls and their pockets to support their brothers and sisters, demonstrating the remarkable strength, generosity, and unity of our people.
This month, through JSU programming across South Florida, we honored the lives lost on October 7, 2023, through moments of silence, guest speakers, and videos. While remembering the horrific events of that day, we also highlighted something equally important: the enduring bonds that unite us and the strength of our people in times of hardship. Our teens came away with a renewed understanding that they are not simply witnesses to Jewish history, but active participants in shaping its future, with a vital role to play in ensuring the continued strength and vibrancy of the Jewish people.
My hope is that, during this time of reflection, we not only remember what we lost but also feel renewed by our deep sense of belonging and connection to the Jewish nation. May this October inspire us to strengthen our connection to our beautiful tradition and to one another, recognizing that each of us has a role to play in the future of the Jewish people.
Am Yisrael Chai.
